The research that is born in our hospitals drives the future of medicine in Puerto Rico
Hospital Group held the seventh Annual Research Symposium "Dr. Carlos Disdier Rodríguez," a meeting that brought together different generations and medical disciplines to share knowledge and address health challenges for Puerto Rico.
Research that comes from real experiences in patient care has the power to transform medicine. On August 8, 2026, more than 341 attendees met at the Hotel Caribe Hilton to learn about the work, exchange perspectives and recognize the talent of our academic community.
This seventh edition reaffirmed the commitment of the Hospital Group to medical training, innovation and the development of knowledge that contributes to providing increasingly safe, effective and human care.

Questioning and investigating to transform medical care
The resident doctors presented research and clinical cases related to some of the most relevant health challenges in Puerto Rico. The topics included rare paediatric conditions and diagnostic challenges; cardiovascular and cardiometabolic diseases; treatment alternatives; prevention of hospital readmissions; adherence to sleep apnea treatment; vaccination during pregnancy; infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance.
Complex cases were also discussed that highlighted the diagnostic challenge and the value of multidisciplinary management, along with medical follow-up, early detection and informed decision-making to improve patients' results.

36 professionals evaluated scientific work
The jury brought together well-known professionals in clinical research, medical education and specialties such as pediatrics, internal medicine, family medicine, cardiology, infectology, neonatology, nephrology and clinical psychology. His experience ensured a rigorous and multidisciplinary evaluation, while providing our resident and fellow doctors with valuable recommendations to strengthen their training and the development of their research.

Una nueva generación de investigadores se destaca
La calidad, el rigor y la relevancia de los trabajos presentados, junto con la diversidad de temas abordados, evidenciaron el interés de nuestros médicos residentes, fellows, internos y estudiantes por ampliar el conocimiento e impulsar el desarrollo de la medicina. Los premios y reconocimientos destacaron investigaciones y casos clínicos sobresalientes, reflejo de su compromiso con la profesión y la búsqueda de nuevas maneras de mejorar el cuidado de los pacientes.
El Gallito Castao símbolo de orgullo colectivo
Este año se presentó por primera vez el premio Gallito Castao, un trofeo itinerante representado por la talla de un gallo y creado en honor al Dr. Carlos Disdier Rodríguez, uno de los pilares de Grupo Hospitalario y quien, durante la ceremonia, compartió emotivamente su afición por los gallos.
Inspirado en el gallito castao que “no juye ninguna pelea” y cuya fortaleza nace de la colaboración y la unidad de equipo, el premio reconoce al programa con la mayor participación en investigaciones por residente. En su primera edición fue otorgado al Programa de Residencia en Medicina de Familia de Manatí Medical Center, que custodiará la pieza como símbolo de orgullo colectivo hasta el próximo Simposio, cuando pasará a la institución que alcance la mayor participación. Así, el Gallito Castao recorrerá los hospitales de Grupo Hospitalario y llevará consigo el legado del Dr. Disdier y el compromiso de continuar fortaleciendo la investigación.
Las Manos detrás del Simposio
El éxito de esta edición fue posible gracias al compromiso, la planificación y el trabajo en equipo del Comité Organizador. Desde la coordinación de los trabajos científicos y los participantes hasta la producción de cada detalle de la actividad, sus integrantes hicieron posible una jornada que reunió a distintas instituciones, especialidades y generaciones alrededor de un mismo propósito: impulsar la investigación y fortalecer la educación médica.

En paralelo al programa científico, se realizó una cobertura especial con 19 entrevistas transmitidas en vivo a través de las páginas de Facebook de Manatí Medical Center, Mayagüez Medical Center, Bayamón Medical Center y Puerto Rico Children’s Hospital. Médicos residentes, fellows, estudiantes, facultativos, integrantes del jurado y otros profesionales vinculados al Simposio compartieron las historias detrás de sus investigaciones y distintas perspectivas sobre la importancia de investigar desde nuestros hospitales.

Cada investigación presentada confirma que en nuestros hospitales existe el talento, la curiosidad y la determinación necesarios para continuar impulsando el futuro de la medicina.
Con la mirada puesta en el próximo Simposio, continuamos trabajando para ampliar la participación, fortalecer la colaboración entre nuestros programas y crear oportunidades para que más profesionales en formación conviertan sus preguntas y experiencias clínicas en conocimiento al servicio de Puerto Rico.
